Chang Huey, FIT ASIA ALUMNI

Who am I and what am I known for: I’m Chang Huey, a Physiotherapist with a specialisation in musculoskeletal and sports injuries. I’m known for my focus on individualized treatment plans that empower clients to regain control over their symptoms and return to their active lives. My career journey has been marked by a commitment to evidence-based practices, community service, and advancing physiotherapy through continuous learning.

What inspired me to pursue this career path

Growing up with a background in sports, I deeply understood the frustration of injuries and the drive to get back to one’s best form. My desire to help others overcome similar challenges led me to physiotherapy, where I could apply scientific approaches to facilitate recovery and enhance my clients’ quality of life. This blend of passion for health, fitness, and service pushed me to pursue this career path.

Do I recommend fitness qualifications over experience, and why?

I believe both qualifications and experience are crucial. Certifications provide foundational knowledge and credibility, but hands-on experience refines your skills and teaches you to adapt to unique client needs. Personally, I will stand more towards experience side.

What does my typical day look like?

Every day is a blend of client sessions, continuous learning, and administrative responsibilities. It might look smooth, but it’s dynamic and challenging! I spend time assessing clients, implementing treatment plans, and ensuring I’m up-to-date with the latest research.

How have advances in technology influenced my career?

Technology has transformed physiotherapy in exciting ways. For Physiothrapy, we use tools like the Kinvent to objectively measure rotator cuff strength, which allows us to track progress and tailor treatment plans effectively. Tech innovations improve accuracy, but they also require balance. There is a need to focus on blending technological insights with personal care.

My mission, values, and aspirations My mission is to empower clients to take charge of their health and well-being, promoting autonomy and resilience. I value empathy, continuous learning, and community involvement, and I aspire to expand my role in helping others through both one-on-one care and larger community initiatives.

Who I look up to Professionally

I admire leaders in sports rehabilitation who advocate for evidence-based practices. Personally, I am inspired by healthcare professionals who balance clinical excellence with a genuine dedication to community service, as this resonates with my own values. A name will be: Khalid Maidan from clinicalphysio

The biggest challenges I face with clients One challenge is managing client expectations, especially when recovery takes time. Physiotherapy is a process, and building trust and patience is crucial. Helping clients see the small victories along the way makes a big difference.

What I enjoy most about my career

The best part of my work is witnessing clients’ progress and knowing I played a role in their recovery. Seeing someone return to their sport or daily activities, pain-free, is incredibly rewarding.

Tools and products I prefer in practice

Alongside the Kinvent, I often use dry needling for trigger points and sports massage techniques. These tools help to relieve pain and tension, promoting quicker recovery.

Spare time activities

Outside of work, I enjoy time with family, exploring new food spots, and staying active in the gym. Regular fitness keeps me in the mindset of my clients and ensures I walk the talk in promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Training regimen

My workouts are a mix of strength training and conditioning, focusing on functional movements that improve both power and endurance. This also helps me maintain the physical resilience needed to handle my daily work tasks. I try to hit the gym 4-5 times a week.

Encouragement style with clients

I believe in positive reinforcement and setting realistic goals. Celebrating small improvements along the way motivates clients and builds their confidence.

Top tips for emerging exercise professionals

Stay curious and committed to learning. Certification is a great starting point, but it’s the hands-on experiences and continuous education that will set you apart. Don’t forget the importance of empathy and effective communication; they are as essential as technical skills.
