Obesity and Weight Management Exercise Specialist

An interactive workshop where theory meets practical application for exercise professionals who seek to apply an individualized approach, and assess and motivate physically inactive adults suffered from obesity to an active and healthy lifestyle. During this educational course the participants will know how to analyze and evaluate clients’ health and fitness needs working either preventively or therapeutically while becoming a valuable member of a multidisciplinary clients’ health care team. After this workshop, the exercise professional will be able to design, implement, evaluate and supervise exercise training programs for overweight clients and clients struggling with obesity by collecting and analyzing client information to ensure the effectiveness and safety of customized workout routines. In addition, as part of a team with allied health professionals, a fitness professional will contribute significantly and uniquely in helping the individuals impacted by obesity to improve their health and quality of life through a monitored, customized, and science-based exercise program in many different work settings.

Alexis Batrakoulis

Alexis Batrakoulis has been involved in the health and fitness industry in the past 27 years and currently works as an adjunct lecturer, personal trainer, fitness educator, subject matter expert, and speaker presenting in 40 countries across five continents and is based in Greece. He holds a B.S. in Physical Education and Sports Science with emphasis in fitness, an M.S. in Exercise and Health with emphasis in exercise and obesity, and a Ph.D. in Clinical Exercise Physiology with emphasis in exercise and obesity. His primary research interests focus on the study of high-intensity interval neuromuscular training in obesity. He has authored over 35 international peer-reviewed publications on exercise, including research articles, abstracts, and textbook chapters. Recently, he was selected to author a chapter in the latest edition of the ACSM’s and NSCA’s Personal Training textbooks. He has also earned numerous professional credentials through ACSM (EP, CPT, and EIM 2), NSCA (CSCS, CSPS, and NSCA-CPT), ACE (CMES, CHC, CPT, WMS, YFS, SFS, TES, and FNS), and NASM (CES, PES, and WLS). When he is not at home training clients or working as a teaching and research assistant in the Department of Physical Education and Sport Science at the University of Thessaly, he is traveling around the globe sharing his knowledge as the founder of the International Obesity Exercise Training Institute (IOETI). More specifically, he teaches live and online continuing education courses for health and fitness professionals approved by ACE, ACSM, AFAA, ΙFPA, ISSA, NASM, NSCA, NCSF, and EREPs. Additionally, he is a subject matter expert and an international master trainer at the American Council on Exercise and has also been a member as well as a deputy director of the Professional Standards Committee at EuropeActive, which leads the development of educational standards, oversees the accreditation process for all courses, and registers qualified exercise professionals for all occupational roles in the European fitness sector. More specifically, he has respectively led and contributed to the Technical Experts Groups that developed standards for the occupational roles of Weight Management Exercise Specialist and Pre/Diabetes Exercise Specialist in Europe. Additionally, he has served as a Member on the Exercise is Medicine Credential Committee, Professional Education Committee, International Health & Fitness Summit Program Committee, and Consumer Outreach Committee for the ACSM. He is a recognized Certified Personal Trainer Emeritus through NSCA and is also an NSCA Personal Training Quarterly Editorial Review Panel Member, an NSCA Membership Committee Member, an NSCA Awards and Honors Committee Member, the NSCA Personal Trainers Special Interest Group Executive Council Vice Chair, and the NSCA Education Recognition Program Sponsor at the University of Thessaly in Greece. Recently, he received global recognition as the 2017 IDEA Personal Trainer of the Year Finalist, 2018 IDEA Personal Trainer of the Year, 2019 IDEA China Fitness Innovator, 2020 NSCA Personal Trainer of the Year, 2020 MedFit Professional of the Year Finalist, 2021 PFP Trainer of the Year, 2021 and 2022 ACSM Certified Professional of the Year Finalist.
